Back in 1802, candy – or "sweetmeats" – were a rarity enjoyed only a few times a year. Dried fruits, nuts & spices were some of the most expensive items in William Beekman's Mercantile. So you can imagine what a treat it would have been for Johanna Beekman to make this sweet incorporating all of these ingredients, which has its roots in William's native Dutch ancestry.
We named this nut & fruit confection "Little Mary's Notenfruit" after the little "ghost girl" who inhabits our house – Mary Beekman. We're pretty sure she would've hid a little of it from her siblings, to sneak under her covers and enjoy on Christmas Eve.
Enjoy a slice with cheese, fruit, wine, beer, coffee, tea or just by itself.
